Steven Fox, Music Director
STEVEN FOX is in his 8th season as Music Director of Cathedral Choral Society. He is also the Artistic Director of The Clarion Choir & The Clarion Orchestra in New York and a Cover Conductor at the New York Philharmonic. Steven has appeared as a guest conductor with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Opéra de Québec, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Handel & Haydn Society, Washington Bach Consort, Music of the Baroque (Chicago), Cappella Romana, and Theatre of Early Music (Toronto).
Steven was the Chorus Master for CCS’ performances of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and music from the film Amadeus with the National Symphony Orchestra. In 2023-2024, he performed the complete cycle of Rachmaninoff’s choral works in celebration of the composer’s 150th anniversary, a project that was featured in The New York Times and BBC Music Magazine, and which culminated with a performance of the composer’s Vespers at Carnegie Hall. He has made four recordings of music by Maximilian Steinberg, Alexander Kastalsky, and Rachmaninoff, including CCS’ world premiere recording of Kastalsky’s Requiem. This series has received four GRAMMY® nominations for Best Choral Performance. Fox was also the Chorus Master for the GRAMMY®-award-winning debut recording of Ethel Smyth’s The Prison.
In 2009-2010, Steven was the Acting Director of Music for the renowned music program of Trinity Wall Street. He was named an Associate (ARAM) of the Royal Academy of Music for contributions to the field of music, and has given master classes at The Royal Academy of Music, Dartmouth College, The Juilliard School, and Yale University, where he served for two years as a preparatory conductor of the Yale Schola Cantorum.
